چکیده

The aim of the symposium is to foster cross-disciplinary research on complex systems within or with the help of arts and humanities. The symposium highlights arts and humanities as an interesting source of data, where the combined experience of arts, humanities research, and natural science makes a huge difference in overcoming the limitations of artificially segregated communities of practice. Furthermore, the symposium focuses on striking examples, where artists and humanities researchers make an impact within the natural sciences. By bringing together network scientists and specialists from the arts and humanities we strive for a better understanding of networks and their visualizations in general. The overall mission is to bring together pioneer work, leveraging previously unused potential by developing the right questions, methods, and tools, as well as dealing with problems of information accuracy and incompleteness. Running parallel to the NetSci2011 conference, the symposium also provides a unique opportunity to mingle with leading researchers and practitioners of complex network science, potentially sparking fruitful collaborations. The symposium is a follow up to the first satellite event on Arts | Humanities It is a pleasure to introduce the second incarnation of our Leonardo satellite symposium on Arts, Humanities, and Complex networks at netSci2011. Last year at our first symposium at Northeastern University in Boston we attracted about 90 attendees including a significant number of non-locals and external people mingling with the NetSci2010 crowd. It became clear that the arts and humanities should belong to the list of disciplines commonly associated with complex network research, in addition to mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, biology, and social science. This year we received an outstanding response to our call for papers, which literally blew our minds regarding the growing interest and quality of proposals coming from both traditional arts and humanities, as well as established complex network science practitioners. Looking for eight 15-minute contributions, we received 49 submissions, resulting in an acceptance rate of 16%. Contributors were selected using a peer review process with four independent reviewers per paper. Selected submissions cover a large territory around the arts, humanities and complex networks. Topics include the contemporary Hungarian art scene, archaeology, the interrelation of languages, art history, visualization methodology, music and the brain, the measurement of art perception, as well as relevant artworks. Together with our keynotes who will examine artist ranking, matrix visualization, and culturomics we are happy to host another day of inspiring talks and …

Arts and humanities literature: Bibliometric characteristics of contributions by Turkish authors

Scholarly communication in arts and humanities differs from that in the sciences. Arts and humanities scholars rely primarily on monographs as a medium of publication whereas scientists consider articles that appear in scholarly journals as the single most important publication outlet. The number of journal citation studies in arts and humanities is therefore limited. In this paper we investiga...
